Re-coloring painted files

This is a short tutorial to easily change colors of already painted 3MF files using PrusaSlicer,  Bambu Studio, and OrcaSlicer

1. First, you need to identify if the multicolor object is a multi-part object, or a single object painted file:

Multi-Part object

On the right side of the screen, you will see the object list. A multi-part object contains many parts each one assigned to a different extruder/color

2a. Re-color a multi-part object:

Be careful if you rotate the view, because you will exit the color assignment mode. You will need to click again in the object list part, otherwise you may move a piece accidentally.

First clue is that PrusaSlicer doesn't show the painted colors if you are outside the painting menu or the slice preview. On the right side of the screen, you will see the object list. A painted object has the "Multimaterial painting" modifier.

On the left side of the screen, you will see the object list. A painted object has the "bucket" symbol next to the assigned color.

2b. Re-color a single part painted object:

You may find some "residual" spots of paint. This is caused by the way 3MF files store the polygon color info, depending on the way they were painted. Check every angle and paint those spots as well. I haven't found a solution yet.

Pro-tip: If you need to swap colors you can use a temporary additional color as a helping tool. Just add an additional extruder with a random color to help you assign the colors as you want. Then remove it 😉

That's it!

Hope you find it useful!
